eSATA, USB 3.0, and eBay

Well, it has been an interesting few weeks for me. Although it has been around for years now, I have just discovered how great eBay really is! I've order a few trinkets and bobbles from eBay over the years, but I tended to focus only of a few select items that I could not easily find locally.

You probably don't know this about me yet, but I am a very impulsive person. I don't like to wait for anything. I will usually take a hit, even financially, if it means I don't have to wait for something. This is why eBay has never appealed to me before now. But I finally get it! If I order enough stuff, for long enough, I start to receive my earlier purchases, as I am still ordering new items. So I can get that oh-so-heavenly feeling of instant gratification, while I wait. It's great!

So, what have I been ordering? Glad you asked. I've been tweaking out my Windows 7 PC with every port possible. This PC was a great buy when I got it several months ago. For $20 I got a 3GHz Pentium 4, with 2 gigs of RAM, a DVD r/w drive, and a 120 GB hard drive. It even came freshly formatted with Windows XP Pro. I bought two of these machines, as there were probably 80 of them for sale at that price. I am a Mac guy, but I work with Windows all day long, and that is where my training is, so It's good to have at least one PC around that I can play with.

Since I picked up this machine, I've been "optimizing" it. I first installed Windows 7 Home Premium, and two more gigs of RAM. I also popped in two 2 TB hard drives for storage. I then started looking around eBay to see about adding a SATA PCI card. I thought that I may want to add a few more 2 TB drives to this system, and build one heck of a home storage computer.

Well, before I knew it, I had ordered eSATA cables and adapters, a USB 3.0 PCIe card, and other varies parts, all to be added to this lowly little PC.

Today, I got my USB 3.0 external 2.5" hard drive enclosure, and was able to finally test out what kind of speed I could get out of it. I am amazed at just how fast the data transfer is from this drive. I'm getting about 55-70 MB/second! I can transfer a 700MB video file in about 9 or 10 seconds. That's just crazy!!! Needless to say, I am impressed.

So what do I have in-store for this cheap PC? Firewire, eSATA, more hard drives? I'll have to see. I suppose it all depends on what I can find on eBay and how much I can cram into this thing. :)
